WNYC RADIO ROOKIE
First Broadcast: February 27, 2008
SHIRLEY “STAR” DIAZ
“Radio Rookie Shirley Diaz is on the brink of aging out of the foster care system when she turns 21 this fall. Many young people face huge challenges when they leave the system. And a disproportionate number of New York City’s 17,000 kids in foster care struggle with homelessness at some point in their lives. Braced for adulthood, Shirley—whose nickname is Star—looks to herself for support. ”
FDR and the New Deal is the starting point in American history for welfare. Your web log will answer the following questions:
a) What is a definition of welfare? Give examples of the kinds of welfare Diaz has been on or may go on.
b) From FDR’s perspective, why is welfare important to keeping the entire Nation healthy, not just the people who get it?
c) Do welfare programs merely create increased dependency? Should they be abolished altogether? Or should additional funds be invested to develop more comprehensive job-training and childcare programs that might reduce the number of chronic welfare recipients?

Welfare is a system that helps you if you need maybe an apartment or food, and other things. Shirley Diaz, a foster child who is about to age out of welfare is being helped out with food, by getting foodstamps and fostercare. Her caseworker is also helping her get an apartment.
I think that from the FDR's perspective welfare is helping everyone in the nation, even the people that dont need it because with welfare your keeping homeless people out from the streets, these people can be dangerous to themselves and maybe to others so its keeping the people safe too and the needy some help. Although im not really sure about it.
Im very indecisive on my opinion on welfare. First of all because if you were homeless or in need of support, you would want somebody to help you out, but then again for the people that dont do anything and still get welfare you get mad that you have to pay for those lazy people. I guess what im trying to say is that welfare shouldnt just give people things for free, that just creates dependency, and its unfair for the people that are paying for welfare and dont even need it. Welfare should be some project that helps unemployed people get jobs, make them learn something that the nation needs, like nurses or teachers.
Welfare is a system that help individuals if you need food or a home to live and others. Shirley Diaz is a foster child who is going to stop the the welfare program because of her age. She is getting food from the welfare and her caseworker is helping get an apartment for her to live in.
I think that from FDR's perspective, welfare is important to keeping the entire Nation healthy because if one company or market runes out of business or so it will affect the entire nation. The welfare program can help many homeless and poor people from the streets and keeping them from danger.
I am indecisive on my opinion on welfare. First if you were homeless, you would want somebody to help you out. Also, for the people that don't do anything and still get welfare you get angry that you have to pay for those people. I am saying is that welfare shouldn't just give people things for free. It is unfair for the people that are paying for welfare and don't even need it.
Welfare is something that helps a person when they are unemployed. They get like food stamps so if the person doesn't have food they can buy it. Shirley stayed at foster homes so she can make her way through. Her lawyer tried to help her by getting shelter for her. Her sister encouraged her to get a job so she won't need to rely on food stamps and etc.
For Franklin D. Roosevelt welfare is important because by giving people shelter and or a foster home he has their attention. He may also get support by the homeless. The most important is that even the people who don't have welfare will feel safe. Being homeless is a weapon who hurts everyone and it makes them vulnerable.
Welfare invades the persons mind. They think I can live on welfare forever or until I get a job. Since they think that way they might as well not even try to find a job. They shouldn't even try to help them selfs so they become independent.Welfare should be transformed into a program only for the unemployed and homeless. Also people who are with welfare should help the people who take welfare to find jobs. They should encourage them to keep looking. It's not like they will be unemployed forever. They can be unemployed forever but only if they don't try to find a job. What I am trying to say is additional funds should be invested to develop more comprehensive job-training and childcare programs that might reduce the number of chronic welfare recipients.
Welfare is a way that help individuals if you are in need of help like a place to live. Shirley Diaz is a foster child who is going to control the the welfare program because of her age. She is gets food from welfare and her caseworker is helping her to get a apartment for her to live in.
I think that from FDR's point of view, welfare is important to keep the entire Nation well controlled because if a company or a market runs out of business it will affect the entire nation. The welfare program could help many homeless people and keep them from danger.
I am doubtful on my opinion on welfare. First if you were homeless, you would want somebody to help you out. Also, for the people that don't do anything and still get welfare you get very mad that you have to pay for those people. I am trying to say that welfare shouldn't give people stuff for free. It is not fair for the people that are paying for welfare and don't even need it.
Welfare is a idea that was created by the government to help stop depressions. Shirley Diaz is a foster child who is relying on welfare that the government gives her. Shirley stays in foster homes, so live live simple. Unfortunately, Shirley is about to be aged out from getting welfare and helped. Shirley's caseworker is helping her get an apartment.
In my opinion I think that FDR's perspective welfare is helpful to everyone in America. Even if some Americans who don't need welfare, it helps unfortunates to live life decently. Welfare can help Americans who gets laid out to have enough to support their family or themselves.
I think welfare is a good plan to help many Americans stay out from being homeless. In my opinion I think many residents take advantage of welfare. I don't think anyone should help lazy citizens who don't want to help themselves but sit at home and wait for someone to help them. I think that welfare shouldn't be helping everyone and helping everyone get free things. I don't think welfare should give people free things because, I think everyone should work for what they need. I think welfare should update the use of it because I think everyone should be equal and I don't think anyone should be helping anyone else that isn't helping themselves. I think welfare are helping people but its also making people less dependent.
A.There were two definitions in my Scholastic Dictionary for the word "welfare"
1. Someone's welfare is the persons state of health, happiness, and comfort.
2. Money or other help given by government tp people who are in need.
The kind of welfare that fits Star's position would be would be the second definition. When her father killed her mother, she, along with her brothers and sisters, were alone in this cold world. With her mother gone, and ger father sent to jail, Star had no place to go and no where to turn but was somewhat saved by foster care. The government is helping her while she is in need, providing her a place to stay in a bed with a roof over her head at the projects. Not the best conditions, acctually they are pretty bad, but it is what she has to survive. She is probably on food stamps so that she would be able to eat.
B.From FDR's perspective, welfare is important to keeping the Nation healthy and not just the people who get it. This is because keeping people out of the harsh streets and giving them a home would be more safe for them and the people. Even though the homes are not the best, they are all they have and now they have less to worry about, and some kind of food to eat. This way, maybe there are less people on the streets begging for food and a place to stay and bothering them.
C. The thing about welfare is that some people become very dependent on it and it is not helping them, believe it or not. Once they live on and only on welfare, they do not see what they really have to do to survive in this world. For an example, Star has been on welfare since her mother died. She has depended on welfare for a place to sleep and food. It is what she has to survive. This is helping her survrirve and also making things worse at that same time. She has a place to saty now, but once she turns 21, she will fall on her behind and will not know what to do. This whole time her parents were gone welfare (and her sister) is all she pretty much has and it has closed her eyes on the realities in this world, and what might happen when welfare would not be there to hold her up. On the other hand some people would not be able to survive without welgare at all! They would have no shelter and no chance to live. So on this note i propose that welfare programs would be more earthcoming, so that to be able to go on welfare it would be necessairy to have a job. That way the people would be more dependent on themselves, so incase there is a turn on welfare and it would not be able to help out, the people would have something more stable to fall back on.
My definition of welfare is money that is taken from people through taxes and given to people who don’t make enough money to support themselves. In the broadcast Shirley Diaz tells everyone that since she’s turning 21 she can’t stay in foster care, which is a type of welfare. Also she’s saying that she might have to start using food stamps. Something similar happened to her sister, she was pregnant and was thinking of going on welfare to support herself and her baby, but her baby died so now she can’t apply for that type of welfare.
FDR thinks that welfare is good for everyone is because it can help a lot of people in different situations. People can get welfare if they have kids, if they’re homeless, if they don’t have jobs etc.FDR knows that so he was trying to take advantage of that to make the American nation rebuild itself and heal from its past mistakes.
I do think that some people are too dependent on welfare, but at the same time I think it greatly helps our nation. On one hand people who are too dependent on welfare would get it and not try to get off it and get a job, instead they would just lay back relax and let the money roll in. On the other hand welfare can be useful, like those who don’t have homes the welfare could help pay for a home or at least get the people to live a little better. Also it could help those with a lot of children that don’t have enough money to support them with the simple necessities like food and clothing. So on the subject of welfare being abolished because people are too dependent on it and it being kept to restore lives, I think we should keep welfare.
Welfare is a system thats helps people who have lost control of their lives and need some asistence. They help by giving the people apartments and food. Diaz is getting help with finding a small aprtment.
What I think that Fdr is trying to do is help out everyone who needs help and support. He wants to be a good example for the society and doesnt want to have people suffering when they have help. He wnts everyone to have a home and whats every one to try to get their lives together.
I do think that welfare has increased dependency. I do not think we should stop it because some people really want to change their lives and they just need a little push. But some people are lazy and just dont want to do anything to help put their lives back in control. So therefore I think that welfare should help those who want to change their lives.
Welfare is something that helps people when they need help. Like Shirley Diaz she was given food and she was helped by them because at her age she needed to find a place to live so welfare helps her do those stuff.
I think that from FDR's perspective welfare is helping everyone even if they don't need it becuase it can help everyone who doesn't have a home or who doesn't have food. Also by everyone having welfare maybe someone who needs it but doesn't look like they do it can save their life and other people.
In my opinion I think welfare is good for helping out people who are homeless but if people who doesn't need it then they shouldn't give them welfare because then they will start relying on welfare instead of relying on themselves but for the people who need it that is different. For other people who don't need it if you keep on helping them then they will start being dependent. Welfare helps a lot of people who need it but for people who don't need it won't really help them.
Welfare is a system that help individuals like if you need food or a home to live in and others. Shirley Diaz is a foster child who is going to stop the the welfare system because of her age. She is getting food from the welfare and her caseworker is helping her to get an apartment for her to live in.
From FDR's point of view, welfare is very important to keep the Nation healthy and not just the people who is get it. This is because keeping people out of the streets and giving them a home to live in would be more safe for them. Even though the homes are not that good, but it's better than nothing and now they have less to worry about, and they get some kind of food to eat. This way, there are less people on the streets begging for food and a place to stay.
I don't know what to choose because people who are homeless needs support in welfare, and some people get welfare and don't do nothing. So you would be supporting those lazy people. If this keeps on happening it just creates dependence on the people who are getting welfare.
Welfare is a kind of program that helps people that are in need of food, shelter, and money.
i think that from FDR's perspective welfare was helping everyone because it was a way to have less homeless people and keep the nation safe without thinking that you were going to get mugged by a homeless person.
In my opinion i think welfare is a very useful system for the country but i think there are alot of faults with it. A majority of the people that are on welfare need it but there is a large amount of people that are just lazy and refuse to work. you could be paying for those lazy people i think certain people should be able to be on welfare until the get back on their feet. Welfare should also have a system where they help people get jobs so they can buy there own house and buy there own food.
I think that welfare is a type a system that helps people in need of money, food, and shelter. Shirley Diaz,or Star, has been a foster child since she was 13.
I think that FDR's point of view on this is that he probably wants more people to vote for him. He just wants their attention. He would think that when homeless people have a home, they will feel save around him and support him in everything that he does.
I personally think that welfare DOES create dependency because for homeless people if they live on welfare they won't know how to live the real world. They will just be handed stuff that they won't earn on their own. I think that for people that have welfare, it's not fair for the people that NEED welfare
Welfare means to me the financial assistance to an individual or for a family but the government supplies the money. Shirley Diaz may have been getting food stamps or money to supply them for things they need such as clothes or a home or apartment.
I think that FDA's perspective of welfare is that he wants to help everyone. He wants people to have a chance in life and he doesn't want people to live on the streets. He is trying to say that if it was you would you want to be helped or be forgotten about.
I think it would help those people be less dependent on it because if someone would walk into a grocery store with food stamps they may be embarrassed to give them the food stamps, so maybe it would make them less dependent.
The definition of welfare that I feel best fits this situation is organized efforts of government agencies that grant aid to the poor, the unemployed and children stuck in foster care.
Star Diaz has been granted food stamps, and a foster home to live in. The kind of welfare star might go on includes her getting an apartment, she thinks she’ll be able to get a job faster and her G.E.D.
From F.D.R's point of view, welfare is important to keeping the Nation healthy and not just the people who get it. He feels this way because keeping people out of the rural and hard streets and giving them a shelter and place to rest their head would be safer for them and the people. The more people that have a place to lay their heads the more help they get with the new deal. The more workers they get to help revive the country.
With the country giving welfare aid it is creating a dependency, But not for everyone who is on welfare are only depending on that care. Some people on welfare try to make themselves better and get their money right and have a better life style. Though there are the other type of welfare people getting aid that only depend on welfare. Those are the people that have became too dependent on welfare. But we don’t know maybe that’s just all they’ve known all these years like star. Welfare should not be abolished because not everyone has developed the backbone to live on his or her own. Some people still have to get their stuff together and it wouldn’t be fair to take away the little money or shelter that they have. Additional funds should be invested to develop more comprehensive job-training and childcare programs that might reduce the number of chronic welfare recipients. This will help because the less people on welfare the more money that can go to school, but even though these people are getting themselves together they should not be taken off of welfare.
