12. The State of the Economy. Due Fri. Jan. 19th

Katherine Newman, a sociology professor at Princeton, has studied the plight of the Americans she terms the "missing class"--people who are not classified as poor but whose incomes are so low that they lead what she calls a "fragile existence." Her findings are the subject of the first student reading which I handed out in class. Proposals to address the needs of the "missing class" are itemized in the second reading. The inquiry activities that follow include suggestions for researching how the current presidential candidates would address the problem of low-income Americans.

Assignment: Go to a presidential candidate's website. Find out what proposals and/or programs, if any, does this candidate support that would benefit "the missing class"? Write a short response on what reasons are there to believe a particular proposal would work? What reasons are there that it would not?.

Barack Obama's plan for education , is highly understandable. He planned his plan out and it is very eficient.
Barack Obama proposes that for the early childhood education for children age newborn to five he will emphasize the early education for children to prepare them for kindergarten. He will create a early learning challenge grant to promote states to moving toward voluntary universal pre-school.He will also provide affordable and high quality child care to ease the burden on working families.
Obama's plan for students from kindergarten to their senior years in high school is to reform the No Child Left Behind law(NCLB).He feels that "teachers shouldn't have to spend the academic year preparing students to fill in bubbles on standarized tests. He will improve the assesment test and improve student learning in a timely individualized manner. He will aslo improve (NCLB) accountabilites so that we can support schools that need improvement instead of punishing them.He will also make math and science a national priority. He says that he will recruit math and science degree graduates and he will ensure that all children have access to strong science curriculums for all grades. He will address the drop out crisis and expand high quality afterschool and summer learning programs.Obama also proposes that he will make free public colleges or lower the prices for the colleges that we now have.
This will help the "missing class" become stronger and giving the children of the middle class a reason to succeed. With Obama helping our education problem This will give the students a reason to want to go o school.Hopefully Obama will be able to fix the drop out crisis and try to keep children from droppin out of school.Statistics show that six million middle and high school students read significantly belo their garde level.A full third of high school graduates do not go straight to college and thirty percent of of students are forced to take remedial science and math class because they were not prepared. This is partly why Obama proposes to work on the science and math curriculum.
The high school drop out rate in America is one of the highest in the industrialized world.only seventy percent of hogh school students graduate with a diploma and African American and Latino students are less likely to graduate than white students.
Barack Obama fixing the NCLB program will definitely help the "missing class children".If anyone can do it, it's my hoie Barack!!!!!!

Hillary Clinton wants to lower taxes for the middle class. Also the marriage penalty relief, offering new tax cuts for healthcare, college and retirement, and expaning the EITC and the child care tax rate.Hillary Clinton wants to higher the minimum wage for the 21st Century. She will restore the Science Policies and reverse what President Bush has kept as a policy that are holding back the United States. Hillary Clinton will make the middle class strong so all workers will have their fair share.

Ms.Clinton will help others who do their work, She will make sure the government gives them the tools to move on. Hillary Clinton said " I want America to regain control of its destiny. She will move back toward a balanced budget and surpluses. I believe that we should develop a set of budget rules similar to those we had in the 90s which required us to fund new expenditures with new revenues or cuts in other areas."

What Hillary Clinton wants to do will work if the public is with her.Yet if the people aren't with her the nation will be in the wrong hands.

I went to Hillary Clintons presidential website and found out that she is working on some very good issues.
Hillary Clinton plans to fix the problems of the middle class. She plans to l,ower taxes for middle class families, which could help parents who are having trouble supporting their families. She also plans on giving good health care to all americans and making colleges more accesible and affordable.
As for the war in Iraq she plans to right what Bush has done wrong. If she becomes president she plans to end the war immedietly in three steps: 1.bring our troops home. 2.work to bring stability to the region 3.replace military force with a new diplomatic initiative to engage countries around the world in securing Iraq's future.
One more thing Hillary plans to fix is the global warming problem. She plans to reduce americas dependency on foreign oils so that we can use cleaner initiatives. She thinks this will reduce greenhouse gas emisions by 80% by the year 2050.

Hillary Clinton does want to do something for the missing class. She doesnt really say that she is plaining to do something for the missing class but her ideas will help. She wants to make sure that everyone will have a health care plan. Anyone with extremly low income will get medicare. She also wants to make it very affordable for people and she also want to have plans like American Health Choices Plan (PDF)
Health Care Costs Agenda
Health Care Quality Agenda
Long-Term Care Agenda
Long-Term Care Insurance Market
Plan to Fight Cancer
Plan to Fight Autism
HIV/AIDS. So this is taking care of most of the problem of the missing class

I think that Hillary Clinton does not care about the "missing class".
She does not talk about anything that has to do with the missing class in her campaign. But the only thing that can help the missing class is to get a health insurance.
It's like she never herd of a missing class. She only talks about different issues and the missing class is an important issue.I think
that this is not the president we really need. And the best presidental canditate that I think is and the one who cares about the missing class is Barrack Oboma.

After searching for Hilary Clinton’s view on “the missing class”, the only thing that came up was Hilary Clinton’s plan to strengthen the middle class. This was interesting because the middle class is quite close to “missing class”. I agree with Hilary’s idea of lowering taxes of the middle class families. The average middle class worker comes home to the family with a pay check. The pay check appears to less money than expected. Now the family needs to pay for the gas, electric, and the water bill. Also pay the rent and there just might be enough money for a decent meal. The children in the family grow very fast but there isn’t enough money to buy good and decent clothes. If one of the family members has an accident; paying for their health insurance will throw them completely off track, and they would suffer more with money problems. All those taxes they pay add up and might equal enough money to help out these middle class families even more. Another idea of Hilary’s which is wonderful is providing quality, affordable health care to every American. That would help the middle (or missing) class if an injury occurs.
Making collage accessible and affordable is another great idea Hilary Clinton has. Now students who graduated from high school would have an easier way to go to school and more students would go now that collages would be affordable. In my opinion, and many others as well, there is no disagreement with Hilary’s ideas on the middle or missing class.

Senator Hillary Clinton said she has a plan to restore America's middle class. After six and a half years of Bush administration policies, the middle class is struggling to succeed in an economy that is leaving more and more Americans behind. This plan is to help the middle class not the missing class. I think that Hillary Clinton doesn't know much about the missing class and know about the middle class more because she was born in the middle class. She wants to improve the middle class by lowering taxes for middle class families, providing quality, affordable health care to every American. Also making college accessible and affordable, confronting the growing problems in the housing market, bolstering retirement security by promoting savings and investment, returning to fiscal responsibility and moving towards balanced budgets, harnessing innovation to create the high-wage jobs of the 21st century.
Finally, creating a $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund to jump start research and development of alternative energies and strengthening unions and ensuring our trade laws work for all Americans. This is all about the middle class not the missing class. She is trying to improve all middle class and I think she doesn't know about the missing class or doesn't care about them.

Obamas plan for the middle class was to have an early education before kids go to kindergarten. He will also proved a affordable child care. His plan from kindergarten to senior year in high school is No Child Left Behind law. He will improve the assessment test and improve students learning academics. He also proposes that he will make free colleges for family's that cant afford it. Or lower the prices for colleges. That is why I think Obamas plan will work.

Hilary Clinton's plan to benefit the middle class. It's quite amazing that the middle class is actually close to the "missing class". Hilary Clinton's plans lowering taxes and helping middle classes can help many families. The most common middle class workers carry home his or her checks and this money seems just right for all the uses in the family. An average middle class worker can only afford an amount of money for the family's uses. This is going to be a problem for many families because in a big family this money that one person carry home might be the only thing that keeps the family from living. Also the middle class workers , if they have children's it wouldn't support many of the bills for children's because the amount of money they receive. An middle class worker would only have enough for rents, electric and gas bills, and water. If one family only have enough money for these bills then there wouldn't be enough money to support the family.

Providing colleges that are affordable to Americans is another benefit that middle class Americans wished for. This can also give many middle class students who graduated from high school to have chances. This helps middle class student's whose family isn't very wealthy.

This is why I strongly agree with Hilary Clinton with lowering tax for middle class families. Even though this plan benefits middle class the most it is very reasonable. I also agree with Hilary Clinton for providing colleges that are affordable for middle class Americans.

Obama's proposal for the middle class is that he wants nobody to be left behind. He wants kids to have an early education before going into kindergarten. Obama will provide money to get the kids ready for kindergarten. He is trying to improve he assessment test and the teachers will not have to get the kids prepared to take this test. Obama is really in this election so kids can have a good life when they grow up.

I see that Obama's goal is to start a healthy education at a early age. He plans to give education to kids before kindergarten and give them the best quality of day care for families that don't hae the money for other day carees. Obama also wants to increase the funds for the "Early Head Start" and "Head Start" programs. The drop out rate for kids is one other thing he will help by providing help to does kids that want to drop out. He also feels that Math and Science is a big prioity and will get graduates in those feilds to that become teachers and have a srong curriculum in both. As you can see Obama says that alot to help people with small income and anybody else that needs it and will help in th "missing class".

Barack Obama's plan for this issue is very reasonable and good for our country's future. I believe that is will work really well. His plan mostly consists of hildren education and that many children who dont get an education will get more oppurtunities to get an education. He will make a program that has infants from newborn to about 5 to get an early education as they head on to preschool.
He also wants to create affordable childcare for poor of unable to get childcare families. His plan is to help children all over our country and make it stronger.
