In March and April, 2006, illegal immigration, mostly Hispanic, became a major national issue as Congress debated immigration legislation and well over 1 million demonstrators took to the streets of American cities seeking a path toward citizenship for undocumented migrants.
The first reading in your packet deals with undocumented immigrants and the debate about what should be done about and/or for them. After reading it answer the following questions
1. The presence of undocumented migrants pose societal, economic, security and political issues. In each case, why?
2. Why do you suppose Senator Cornyn and others in the Senate and the House oppose "an easier path to citizenship" for undocumented migrants?
3. What do you think of such a path and why?

Many people think illegal immigration will bring many problems. Such as societal, economic, security, and political issues. As for societal, people, such as Tom Tancredo, a representative from Colorado thinks illegal immigration is a “terrorist threat.” There is social tension between kids at school when illegal immigrants go to school also. On the other hand, Angela Sanbrano, executive director of the Central American resource center of Los Angeles thinks that illegal immigrants are “A strong community of dignity. “In economy, Mr. Jeff Flake representative of Arizona says to “be honest, we need foreign workers.” These illegal immigrants are willing to take low paying jobs that most American citizens wouldn’t even dare look at. That would obviously raise economy drastically. We obviously can’t afford to loose 12 million working people in the United States that would bring us into another great depression!
As for security issues for illegal immigrants, Tom Tancredo is taking no chances, as he said earlier about illegal immigrants being “terrorists” he also thinks that “ these people are coming to kill me, you, and your children!” simply outrageous to me. As for political issues, 1 in 8 U.S residents are Hispanic; they counted for 6 percent of the votes in the 2004 elections. As the years go by, more and more Hispanics will be residents to the U.S will explode in the number of eligible voters.
Besides Tom Tancredo, other representatives don’t like the idea of “an easier path to citizenship” to undocumented migrants. They think that these undocumented aliens are taking jobs American citizens need and drop down wages. They think illegal immigrants are terrorists and we should get them out of here as soon as possible.
In my opinion, I disagree with Tom Tancredo and the other people that agree with Mr. Tancredo. Illegal immigrants or American Citizens, they should both have the same rights, same jobs and not be scared to go for the American dream that millions of Americans are trying to accomplish. These Hispanics want the same thing we, American citizens want, a good job, a nice house, and a bright future from them and their family. What’s so wrong about having a goal or a dream? I know if I were president. Everyone would be welcomed to this country.
i think that undocummented immigrants hshould have a shot at the american dream.i think so because i dont understand why they shouldnt not all immigrants are terrorists and how would you now for sure there terrorists?i mean these hispanic people are just like use even though there not born here they have the same blooding running through there vains. i think its absoulutle worng that immigrants have to go through a whole lot an not even get a green card sometimes.
I think that immigrants legal or not, should have a chance to live the american dream. In my opinion i think that America is turning out to be the same way it was in the time of segregation.Thats because just like before America is turning away and looking down on other races.I think that illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay here and should be allowed to have the same rights that any american does.I mean isnt everyone created equal not one race is better than the other or one race has more rights than the other. America used to be a place where you could bring your family and be able to live in america, where the streets are paved with "gold" and where any man or woman could get a job. What happened to that america, where did it go and more importantly why did it go. I'll tell you why its because certain people dont like the idea that people from other countries are coming here and want to live our lifestyle and want to be equals. No they want everything to stay the same they want neighbors who are the same color, same language, same everything.Thats why our society is flawed because some people cant handle the idea of a changing world where everyone is equal.
A lot of people in the United States of America thinks that illegal immigrants will cause a lot of problems to them like societal, economic and others. For societal, a representative, Tom Tancredo, thinks that illegal immigration is a terrorist threat.
As for economic, Mr. Jeff Flake representative of Arizona said that “to be honest, we need foreign workers.” These illegal immigrants are willing to take low paying jobs that Americans don't even take!
Also I think that all illegal immigrants should take a shot at the American dream. The illegal immigrants might change the whole world to a better place. If I were elected to be a president I would let illegal immigrants have a shot of the American dream.
The undocumented immigration debate has many points of view. Some are benefits and some are issues. The issue side has four categories: societal, political, economic and security. One issue in the societal category is that illegal immigrants are considered criminals. Politically-wise, legislation was passed in the House of Representatives that defines all illegal immigrants as felons, having illegally entered the U.S. On the other hand of the social view point, Jaime Contreras, the president of a coalition of immigrant advocacy groups disagrees, stating, "It's outrageous. We're needing to send a strong and clear message that we are people of dignity." In society, undocumented immigrants are simply on a lower step of the social hierachy than other people.
A security issue is that some of the people being smuggled across the border may be terrorists. Representative Tom Tancredo said, "Yes, many who come across the border are workers. But among those are people trying to kill me, you and your children." That maybe a possibility, yet not everyone harbors explosives in their bags and suitcases. There are also economic issues to be taken into consideration. The trump card many politicians attempt to use is the fact that undocumented immigrant take all the jobs americans may need.
But, they support our economy by taking the jobs others frown upon. They are willing to mow your lawn, work in your factories and just be cheap work for small wages. In this author's opinion, immigrants should be allowed and be given an easier path into citizenship. They uphold the economy and all they are trying to do is be equal and establish a life for themselves. These are the issues and personal opinions on the immigration debate.
The presence of undocumented migrants poses societal, economic, security and political issues. It poses social issues because there have been some tensions in Western schools with illegal immigrants. The presence of undocumented migrants poses security issues because some people like Tom Tancredo see illegal immigration as a terrorist threat. It poses economic issues because “we need foreign workers” says Representative Jeff Flake. And it poses political issues because “in 2004’s elections, Hispanics cast just 6 percent of the votes, but birth rates promise an imminent explosion in the number of eligible voters”.
I think that Senator John Cornyn and other others in the Senate and the House oppose "an easier path to citizenship" for undocumented migrants because they might be afraid of America to be overpopulated with immigrants that would be “citizens”.
I believe that we should trust the immigrants to become hardworking “citizens” and let them stay here in America. I don’t see why the Senators can not pass a bill that would have to make sure the immigrants are hard working and could actually stay here in America as American citizens. That way America would have more well trained and hard working citizens making America better and not being afraid of deportation. And they would safely be able to leave the country to visit family members and so on. This is what I believe.
In many minds illegal immigrants have become a threat to them.It effects societal, economical, security and political issues.Undocumented migrants effects societal issues in many ways. This leads to social welfare , education , health care , slavery ,crime ,legal protections.Itleads to economy throughvoting rights , public services , and also human rights. It effects security issues because people now cross the border and since that has been happening there has been more prtection on the border. Many people snuck through the border and now there are fences there to protect the country. It effects political issues because there are more people and lack of jobs for American citizens.
I think they want an easier way so people who are illegal immigrants take up jobs that no one wants. So there is labor in the departments that lack that labor. To show how illegal immigrants could do anything. I think there shoulnd't be a easier way because everyone is guilty until proven innocent.I mean they are human but they need to show that they aren't so called "terrorists." Not everyone is a "terrorists" , not everyone has such thoughts to threat people.
This path should be chosen because there wouldn't be as many issues in the world. This will have an affect but every immigrant should have a greencard. Either they can have a greencard then become a citizen. It would be better because people wouldn't call them uneducated.Illegal immigrants that come to the U.S mostly don't have their highschool degree. So they have to spend hours just to feed their family. No i don't think they shoudl suffer they should just stay where they are so they don't have to be punished to work like this. What justice would it do to the world? This path is better because it can save immigrants and citizens lifes. Also it will save the illegal immigrants respect due to how they live and why they must live that way in a foreign country.
i truly think that undocumented immigrants should have a chance for the American dream. Even though it can cause issues like societal, economic and others, we could still try to make it work for them. The immigrants should have the right to stay here and some but not all rights. I think Senator Coryn and other senate in the house had said "an easier path to citizenship" because they probably feel they deserve the right and feel that they should have an easier path for undocumented immigrants. If they really do think this i truly agree, i really undocumented immigrants should deserve the american dream.
Many people think that illegal immigration will bring many problems in the U.S. Such as societal, economic, and security issues. For societal Tom Tancerdo a representative for Colorado sees illegal immigration as a terrorist threat. For economic Mr. Jeff a representative for Arizona says to "be honest" we need foreign workers who are willing to take low paying jobs. Tom Tancerdo says that the security issues is that illegal immigrants as a terrorist. We can not afford to loose 12 million working people that does our low paying jobs.
I think that Senator John Cornyn and others in the Senate and the House oppose "an easier path to citizenship" for undocumented migrants because they might be afraid that America will be overpopulated with immigrants that would be “citizens”.
I think the best path is to let the illegal immigrants to be legal immigrants. We should also trust them that they are not terrorist like Tom Tancredo. Also America is a free country and why can't we let illegal immigrants get a green card and become a legal immigrants, because America is a free country. That is what i think should be the best path for illegal immigrants.
Many people assume that illegal immigrants will bring many problems. They assume problems like societal, economy, and security. For societal a representative from colorado thinks illegal immigration is a "threat". In economy, Mr. Jeff a representative for Arizona says to "be honest" we need foreign workers who are willing to take low paying jobs. Illegal immigrants are willing to work for a low amount of money which America's citizens wouldn't. If we loose 12 million working illegal immigrants it will bring American's and America's economy to be in sorrow. For security,Tom Tancredo is taking no chances, as he said earlier about illegal immigrants being “terrorists” . Mr Tancredo thinks that the illegal immigrants are coming to kill him, you, and your children!
I think that illegal immigrants should take a shot at the American dream. Why do I think that illegal immigrants should get a shot at the American dream?Well I think that everyone should have a really completed and sucessful future not just America's citizens. Even though its wrong for ilegal immigrants to cross the border when they shouldn't be, But looking back illegal immigrants really helped America. They accepted low amount paying jobs which many American citizens need. Even if the illegal immigrants never helped America they deserve to stay in America since they risk their life. Some illegal immigrants swim to florida and cross the borders, they risk their lives swimming and they really did use their life to get across. Since they tried as hard as they can just to reach in America, they deserve to stay in America but they should still stay as illegal immigrants. This is why i think illegal immigrants should get a shot at the American Dream.
The undocumented migrants have created a threat to the U.S. They cause societal, economic, security and political issues. They cause social issues because there have been some "strange feelings" in Western schools with illegal immigrants. The presence of undocumented migrants cause security issues because some people like Tom Tancredo see illegal immigration as a threat. It poses economic issues because Representative Jeff Flake said “we need illegal workers”. They cause political issues because in the election of 2004, Hispanics cast just 6 percent of the votes, but birth rates promise to cause an increase in the number of eligible voters”.
I think that Senator John Cornyn and others in the Senate and the House created "an easier path to citizenship" for undocumented migrants because they might be afraid of America to be overpopulated with immigrants that would soon become citizens.
I think that we should trust the immigrants to become good citizens and let them stay here in America. I don’t see a problem why the Senators can not pass a law or bill that would have to make sure the immigrants are hard working and could actually stay here in America as citizens. Then America would have more well trained and hard working citizens making America better and not being afraid of deportation. They would also safely be able to leave the country to visit family members and anyone else outside of the U.S. This is what i think should happen.
Undocumented migrants they have many different sides to it. Societal is when they make immigrants coming to the U.S would be against the law. That means they would be put in jail if they were caught. The next one is a econmic problem, which can mean they are taking our jobs. I feel that's mostly our fault because we are the ones that are supplying the jobs. The only good that out of this is tat they takethe jobs that no one wants. Sercurity reasons include when when immigrnts are smuggled or go over the fence. We can't just let anybody get into the U.S without any problem. Now the political is when they are trying to vot to see if it is illegal or not to come into the U.S. Senator Cornyn feels that immigrants shouldn't become legal. His exact words were " would repeat the mistakes of the past, but on a much larger scale because 12 million immigrnts would still be piaced on an easier path to citenzship" which means making all these immigrants have it easy to become a ctizen. I feel they should make it hard because they aren't even supose to be here in the begining, but we should treat them with some dignity, since they are human and most of them are just trying to have a better life.
There are pro's and con's on both sides of the illegal immigration debate.
To begin with just the fact of the phrase "illegal immigration" says a lot. These people are here illegally. They used forged documentation or lied to gain entry into this country, much in the same way as the terrorists entered the country. I'm not saying that the majority of these people are terrorists or came here with the intention of harming us, but they did come here by lying to our government. I understand many of them were fleeing terrible situations and poverty in their home lands, but economically how is our country alone supposed to provide for all these other people when we aren't providing enough for the people who were born here?
I think that if some of the homelands these people came from would help to contribute to our country for providing their citizens a home maybe so many people in Congress wouldn't be against it.
We must remember that our Country is footing the bill alone for these people that are coming here.
There children go to our public schools, they rely on our public health care system and welfare benefits program. Do we want to bankrupt our country just so we can provide a home for all these other countries runaways?
Yes, I do agree that the many roles and jobs that these people fill wouldn't be acceptable to some people and they fill a void. I just really don't know what the right answer is?
How many people can we keep taking without putting a real strain on this country economically?
And why should we forgive and forget that these people came here illegally? They violated laws our laws and snuck into this country. Should we repay them with free education and medical care for that?
Yes this country was founded on giving a home to immigrants who "sought freedom and opportunity". Many immigrants have made the most of these opportunities and have fought for this country and have given back.
They have filled roles and provided services for this country.
There are positives and negatives on both sides of this. Mr. Tom Tancredo and Mr. Jeff Flake both make valid points. I think it will take many years and many bright minds to come up with an answer that benefits everyone. Hopefully someday soon that will happen.
I think that Illegal immigrants should have there chance at the American Dream because they arent harming anyone. They are people just like us. There are 12 million immigrants out in the U.S they arent harming anyone. They are just here to get start a new life in another country. As long as they are following the law they will be able to stay.
Mr. Jeff Flake, the representive of Arizona says" to be honest, we need foreign workers," The illegal immigrants want these low paying jobs the the Americans would not like or even try to work for them. We need the 12 million immigrants in the U.S.
Some people worry about these illegal immigrants because they think they are terroist and they want to harm you and your family. I think that is way to outrageous. I think 1 in 12 million would be terroist. Most of these immigrans come from Mexico. Only a couple are from the Middle East.
This Country is split up into teams, Pro-help immigrants faster way to citizenship and Con- help immigrants faster way to citizinship. There are different ideas that people have about immigration like Societal, economic and security issues. For societal many people believe it is a danger for their children to go to the same school as immigrants. It is also called social tension.
As for economic Jeff Flake a represantative for Arizona said ," To be honest we need foriegn workers. Many people believe we meed them to work low paying jobs that no one wants to have. But as for Security issues, Tom Tancredo said they might be a danger for such things as terrorism, bombing, etc. I think Senator Cornyn and others in the Senate and the House oppsed for an easier path to citizenship because they are afraid that they will overcrowd america.
I believe that illigal migrants should get an easy way to citizen ship BUT they should only get if they are hardworking and not slack-offs and they should be in the back of the line of the Legal migrants.
People in the United States think Illegal Immigrants will cause problems to them in Societal, Economic, and Security issues.
For societal, a representative named Tom Tancredo thought Illegal Immigration would be a terrorist threat. An example for Economic would be Jeff Flake which is a representative from Arizona said in his honest opinion that Illegal Immigrants are taking jobs that have a very low pay that Americans wont even take. An Security issue would be that the Illegal Immigrants are coming to kill everybody said Tom Tacredo.
I think that Illegal Immigrants should go for the American dream because they might make the world a better place. The reason why i think this is because they aren't any different then us except they don't live in the United States.
In the United States there are some people that think illegal immigrants will cause Societal, Economic, and Security issues.
For societal issues, a representative named Tom Tancredo thought Illegal Immigration would be a terrorist threat, which I don’t understand. This man has some strong opinions and I think a lot of them are kind of insulting to some people because saying illegal immigration is a terrorist attack is wrong. Maybe some immigrants are here because a lot of there family is here or they want a fresh start. I’m pretty sure that illegal immigrants are going to come here so they can bomb us and start a war. For Economic issues, a representative form Arizona named Jeff Flake said in his honest opinion that Illegal Immigrants are taking jobs that have a very low pay that Americans won’t take. This is very true. Illegal immigration might not be a bad thing because if we lost almost 12 million working people that would lead us into a great depression. For Security issues, Tom Tancredo said immigrants were coming to kill everyone. He was being very dramatic, how is he sure that all immigrants are coming here just to kill people.
I think that undocumented immigrants should have a shot at the American dream because telling people you’re from another country that means your a terrorist. That is just saying lets have a war. I think every immigrant should have a chance to get there green card and live like a local American.
In my opinion I think that every American legal or not should have a shot at the American dream because it's not fair that legal immigrants get to do things and illegal immigrants can't. Some people think that illegal immigrants who come here from another country would cause trouble for us.
But what if they came here just to start a new life because they want to have a better life? I just think that if the people who are documented get to have a shot at the American dream then the people who are undocumented should have the same rights too.
The presences of undocumented migrants pose a lot of issues these four categories; societal, economic, security and politic. Societal issues are the fact that they account for the raise in our population, and the fact that they build tension in our schools. Economic issues are that undocumented migrants pose are the fact that they’re taking needed jobs, they account for one of eight United States resident, their birth rates are huge and the fact that sooner or later they will be able to vote. The security issues that are posed are that some of them might be terrorists, they are passing the border line without permission and also the thought of trafficking humans and drugs.
I have a strong feeling that
I truly think illegal immigrants or anyone at all should have a shot at the good old "American Dream" because they are human like all of us. America has been teem with alot of illegal immigrants. People thought that it was unfair for illegal immigrants to come because citizens come here by hard work and also they have jobs and is afraid their jobs might be plunder away by the immigrants. Especially they are illegal people who sneak into here. Their are four major problems which is economics, societal, security, and last but not least political. For economics problem it is that people pay immigrants low wages to do a job and kick a citizen off because they pay them more. The immigrants who came will most likely do jobs for low paid because they just want to get a living. A security problem is that the government has to pay more because of a fence to keep the immigrants out and also adding extra security guards which all requires money and alots of it. The government has to paid alot for the extra security for the impending immigrants. The societal problem is when the immigrants might have new dieases with them because anything could happen. They also overflow streets and sidewalks. This has been a crucial problem. The last problem is political problem which immigrants who are hispanics has increased six more percents. And others like Asians, Aficans, Pakistans, Latinos, and so on. A political result they are working on is that anyone who is a illegal immigrants and caught will be sent to prison without a trail. People also are told they must not be aid in any ways or they will be treated as a criminal. I do not think this is fair because not giving them any aids when needed is like the same as not treating them as human. My over all tenet to this is that illegal immigrants should have a shot at the all ☺American Dream☺!
Margareta wrote: In my opinion I think that illegal immigrants should have a shot at the American dream. Even though I believe that I also think it is really unfair to those immigrants who wait their turn to enter the US legally. The illegal immigrants don't know they're doing this but they are actually making a bad example for other immigrants. Those who are illegally crossing the boarder are making major problems for the government. 33% of the immigrants cannot vote so the voting for the president is not sometimes equal.
I think that the illegal immigrants
should have a shot at the American Dream, because in their homeland, the
people are poor and have really low
paying jobs or even some people don't even have any job. These people need a new life of their own where they could get jobs which have better payings.
