5. Questions about Freedom Due Friday Sep 28th

Step 1- Read all the comments from the assignment "What is Freedom?"

Step 2- Choose one comment which is thoughtful.

Step 3-

First, paraphrase the comment you are responding to: For example: “Ms. Maloney thinks that…”

Then, write a question about the chosen comment. The question must be: clear, sincere, useful and be the sort of question which leads to more questions. The question you write must complicate the comment’s argument, make the reader of the comment you are questioning think deeper. Stir up some intellectual trouble.

Brian M. “ said his definition of freedom is that everyone can have their own definition and opinion and they are able to share that openly”.
I say but Brian what if someone’s definition and opinions were offending to someone else. Wouldn’t this cause political problems between the two? Even though people say freedom is the right to be able to speak your mind, but in the world if you rebel against something that other people like especially the upper-class you’ll have problems. Which is the truth because since they are upper-class they feel they have the right to only speak their mind. This is not freedom!!!

The comment I chose to question was Henry Zhangs definition of freedom.

Henrys definition of freedom is the liberty to do whatever you want, but without taking advantage of it too, for example, hurting some or stealing from somebody. The only thing that I definitely disagree with is there he says, You should not go against the law unless you think the law is unfair.

My question is:
Dont you that even though a law might be a little unfair it should still be respected?
Laws keep or country/city/school organized and stabled
Without laws our city would be a disaster!
Psychopaths who sold drugs and killed freely wouldnt be in trouble because they broke the law thinking it was unfair
I think the world wouldnt be safe at all
so now what do you think?

Brian thinks that Rosa Luxemburg came closest to his definition. He talks about what she said and why he thinks she has a good definition. Then he explains that George W. Bush’s definition of freedom is very different definition from most people. And last, Brian tells us his definition of freedom he says “ My definition of freedom is that everyone can have their own definition and opinions and they are able to share that openly”.
I have a question for Brian: you say that freedom for you is when everybody has there own definition, well what if someone’s definition of freedom means to be able to murder anyone he’d like to or robe any store and not be charged with any penalty. Do you think that is acceptable? Is that a kind of freedom good for society and other people, such as the family members of the people that are murdered, or the owners of the store that they robbed?

Brian M said that "My definition of freedom is that everyone can have their own definition and opppinions and they are able to share that openly."

If this started causing problems with each persons definition of freedom wouldnt there be potical problems?

deanna said "My definition of freedom would be being able to do what you want with out getting in trouble. You can not take advantage of the world and laws."
I say but Deanna what if your choice of freedom is affecting someone then what should that person do because that person can put you in jail also take you to court then what will you do ?

Deanna said "My definition of freedom would be being able to do what you want with out getting in trouble. You can not take advantage of the world and laws." I think that is a very interesting definition.

A lot of people do take advantage of everything and people get into trouble a lot. my question is... How can people such as you use the definition in a much more convenient way? and also what do you mean when you are saying whatever you want without getting in to trouble?... because for intance, if i have a gun and i am old enough to get it. I can shoot somebody and hide the body and still not get into trouble. so are you saing that i can get a gun and shoot people but make sure that i dont get into trouble?

Deanna B. said "I agree with Galatians because I know that Christ died for us. He let us all free by opening the gates of heaven. He suffered his life for us."
Wouldn't this idea of freedom only apply to those that believe in Christ? I think that this thought of freedom leaves out a lot of other people in the world who don't believe in Christ.
Freedom especially in our country was founded on being free to choose whatever faith or religion you want to. So I feel like this quote would only mean that those who are Christian are the only ones who are truly free. This leaves out a majority of the rest of the world that don't share that religion. There are millions of people in the world that are not followers of Christ and are still free. Doesn't basing freedom on one individual religion restrict a lot of other people?
If "Freedom of Religion" is one of the main reasons people come to this country, how can you say that they are only free beacuse "Christ set us all free?", if that were the case there would be a lot of people that weren't free.

Nancy Thai said" her definiton of freedom was everyone get to do whatever they can do but they can't take avantage of it".
My question to Nancy Thai
Nancy don't you think that if everyone follows the way your point of freedom is then no one would break the law? I don't think thats freedom because if that is then no body will be in jail.Even if they can do what ever they want to do its not freedom its just the way of how they want to spend their life doing. Even if everyone respects who they are and what they are doing but that is following what others expected thats not what they really want to do. What if no everyone wants to be the way you thought was freedom? Is it really freedom to you now?

Eric Ma's definition for freedom is that he thinks that the freedom guaranteed by the Constitution is the freedom of expression and that will be scrupulously respected. Also it is not freedom to work children, to do business in a fire trap, violate laws against obscenity, or libel and lewdness.

Question: Don't you think that some children might want to work instead of learning? Doesn't business take the risk in a fire trap?

Part of Margaretas's definition of freedom is that you should have the right to say what you wish and do whatever you want as long as you follow specific rules and laws. I can agree with Magareta because I answered that Freedom was that you share your IDEAS openly which doesn't mean that everyone is going to agree with you.
So Margareta don't we have the freedom to legally go against laws or rules that we feel may be unfair? I believe that Freedom is that we can share what our thoughts and beliefs are even though not everyone follows the rules or obey the laws. I still believe freedom is to be able to disagree like we are doing in this class on the definition of freedom.

Emily said that freedom is the way of being fair and everyone is treated the same and they can do whatever they want without getting into trouble. What I disagree is that not everyone can do what they want because things could get out of control like that.

My question: Do you think as a teenager that you have the freedom to really do "anything without getting into trouble?"

Brian M. “ said his definition of freedom is that everyone can have their own definition and opinion and they are able to share that openly”.

If someone’s definition of freedom was to offend or kill someone is that still called freedom?

Mariya.K in your definition of freedom you stated that freedom for you is "I think freedom is when a person gets what they want and what they deserve for their actions, anddoing it under the laws. Even though a lot of people may think freedom is doing whatever they want, I think it is much more complicated than that."
Why do you think that for most people freedom meansbeing able to do whatever they want, is it because of beliefs or is it because they just dont understand what freedom really means? How would you try to help the people understand freedom without offending them or hurting their beliefs?

Is there really a way to prove to the world what freedom really is? Do you think that someday people all over the world will agree on one definition of freedom?

Deanna said "my definition of freedom is being able to do whatever they want without getting in trouble".I think the statement "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand fats therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery" is very interesting and sensible. This statement brings me alot of questions the second I read this. I disagree with your definition of freedom because for example if I have been old enough to purchase a weapon to kill, for instance a dagger. If I would have kill a person with that dagger and hide the person and destroy all evidents so no one ever notice I did it. My question right now is that is this what you mean by not getting in trouble. Is this what you mean by not taking advantage of the world and laws?Killing without getting in trouble.

Nancy Thai.says in her definition of Freedom is something that everyone should be able to do.She states that freedom is a privilege. That you should not take advantage of it like stealing and hurting other people .She think that is a different kind of freedom.
My Question:
In your definition of freedom you state, for stealing and hurting other people is a different kind of freedom. What kind of freedom is that? How is it different from the freedom you mentioned. How are they the same if they are?

Brian M. said that that his definition of freedom is that " everyone can have their own definition and opinion and they are able to share that openly”. But what if one focuses on only one part of a definition, or one's definition offends people in a different society? Most people might even have that same definition and you might guess what that is. They might say " Freedom is when people can do what ever they want" some people might say that, Do you think it can offend some one by saying that, or maybe someone can say " Freedom is when certian people can do what ever they want" that will most likely offend a person. So if some one said that it would only imply to the people that they are reffering to, I thought freedom had to do with the whole nation?
